The present volume of “Fauna Sinica” dealing with the Cirripedia Thoracica (Crustacea: Thecostraca) of the China seas consists of two main parts. The first part is a general account including systematic position of the group, historical review of studies on the thoracic cirripedian fauna, morphological structures and anatomy, embryonic and post-embryonic developments, phylogeny and taxonomic systems of Cirripedia Thoracica, distributional pattern and zoogeography of the Chinese thoracic fauna, biological and ecological characteristics, and their environmental implications. The second part is a systematic treatment of the Chinese thoracic fauna, with keys to all taxa from suborders through species, systematic descriptions of diagnostic morphological characteristics, geographical distribution and ecology of all the species.

The thoracic cirripedian fauna of the China seas is diversified in composition of species and genera, with a total of 198 species belonging to 74 genera and 21 families. Based on their zoogeographic distributional pattern, the components of the fauna may be classified into the following 8 groups:
1) Pelagic species (20 species)
2) Deep sea (bathyal) benthic species with wide geographic range in deep sea from 200 to 2150m in depth (21 species)
3) Cosmopolitan shallow water species widely distributed in the 3 Oceans (21 species)
4) Indo-West-Pacific warm water species (54 species)
5) West-Pacific warm water species (29 species)
6) Sino-Japanese warm water species (Found only in the sea area from southern and eastern China through southern Japan    19 species)
7) Warm water species possibly endemic to China seas (24 species)
8) Temperate species limited to northern China (Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea ~ northern Japan or / and Russian Far Eastern    seas 5 species)
