A total of 102 species and 15 varieties of Rhododendrons have been identified and described in the area concerned. Of these taxa 52 species and 14 varieties are proposed as new since 1978. since this work represents only the result of a preliminary survey of several localities in South China, it seems logical to predict that more detailed investigation of the mountainous areas of the region will disclose better diversity of Rhododendron in South China.

This book has been written primarily to introduce the different varieties of Rhododendron and their distribution in the five provinces of South China and to serve as reference for the exploitation and utilization of regional plant resources.

The whole volume consists of 170, 000 words plus 40 illustrations and is printed in Chinese, English and Latin. It is hoped that the contents will be found useful by personels of the departments of agriculture, forestry, biology, education and scientific research and by amateur enthusiasts as well.
