Located to the east of the Pearl River mouth, Daya Bay is one of the largest bays in Guangdong Province, with an area of 600 k㎡. It remains a clean bay with pure and fresh water until now.

Fishes play extremely significant role in the function of ecosystem as they are the important members in the system and the ultimate reproducers in waters. There are about 300 species of fishes in Daya Bay. In 1985-86, the Institute of Oceanology, CAS, collected the data mainly on 189 species of fishes living in the middle and lower layers in their studies of Daya Bay environments, reproduction in waters and resource multiplication. This atlas is published in form of plates, based on the above data.

The plates not only provide with basic information, but also serve as the useful handbook for fishery producers and scientific workers as well as the good reference for environmental scientists to make direct contrasting analysis and for decision-makers to well plan the construction along the bays.

This atlas generalizes each species of fish as a unit in terms of its distribution, shape, length-weight relationship, fecundity, spawning period and other characteristics, enclosed with a brief inked-line illustration. Besides, one colored photograph is added to each of the 147 species among them.
