First identified in 1956, the Bailiandong cave site was excavated from 1980 to 1982, and the preliminary study of the artifacts recover was carried out jointly by Beijing Natural History Museum and Liuzhou Municipal Museum. Later in 1991-1993, a detailed study on these archaeological materials, funded by China National Science Foundation, suggests that the cultural deposit of the cave has spanned a period from the Upper Paleolithic to the Neolithic with a transitional phase in between, evidenced by the site stratigraphy of five continuous cultural layers. This study has established a new chronological framework of the Bailiandong Cultural series. The Bailiandong cave site is significant in terms of exploring the cultural complicity during the transition from the Upper Paleolithic culture to the Neolithic in Southern China.
