The Chang Tang, a plateau of 700,000 km2 and average above 5000m, is well known to the world for it wideness, peacefulness, remoteness, mysteriousness and many precious wild animals. I am very proud of being lucky enough to enter its hinterland and even its northernmost unpeopled area for 12 times in the past 11 years .However, as many scientists believed, nobody has so far unveiled the enigma hidden in its deep. The Chang Tang, a major part of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, means "northern empty place" in Tivetan. It has long been viewed as a "Life forbidden area" in the history. Recent studies of both foreign and domestic scientists have indicated that the Chang Tang is one of the few unexplored places in the world. It is a beautiful, fertile and abundant place: hot springs effusing all the tear round; flowers dotting the verdant grassland in summer and autumn; white clouds floating and kites hovering in the sky; blue water rippling in the star-studded lakes with fish swimming sprightly; birds nesting closely on "Bird Islands " and blocking sunshine in the sky, with eggs spreading like pebbles on river banks. All of these are harmonious pictures of a natural shrine rare to the modern "civilized" industry society.
