Common Reef Fishes of North Sulawesi,Indonesia,
This book is  a cooperative achivement by the Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceani Administration with Indonesia  Ocean Research Center. This program investigated reef fish 325 species, among of them 176 species belonging to 39 families, 9 orders are selected to be edited in this book. Their ecological pictures and distributions, taxonomy, Chinese names and Indonesia names, living environment, length, morphology and color etc.  are provided.
In the southeastern part of the strait, in Bitung, a city with a population of about 180,000 people (2010 census), the coast is lined with docks housing palm oil plants and other industries. Howerver, despite this, Lembeh Strait is still in a good state. It has clear wate and well known to tourists, due to its beautiful scenery. Our study sites covered the entire strait, including the north and south openings.
The wate visibility in Bunaken and Likupang is up to 35-40 m and the biodiversity is one of the highest in the world, particularly for corals, fish, echinoderms and sponges. For instance, 7 of the 8 of giant clams species that occur in the world can be found here, along with 70 genera of corals and nearly 70% of all fish species (about 2500) known to occur in the Indo-western Pacific.
Nine sites in Lembeh Strait and eleven sites in Likupang and Bunaken were investigated using Underwater Visual Census (fig.2), but coverage was Limited to shallow reef fishes that are wholly or mainly confined to coral reefs of less than about 30 m depth. In total, 325 reef-associated fish species were crecorded from North Sulawesi, of which 176 were photographed, belonging to 9 orders, and 39 families. Most of the fishes (146 species) belong to the Perciformes. The Pomacentridae predominate (38 speices), followed by the Labridae (25 speices), the Chaetodontidae (18 speices), the Apogonidae and Serranidae (7 speices), and the Pomacanthidae and Acanthuridae (6 speices)
There are 176 species in this field guide, ranging in length from 1.7 to 130cm; 153 of them are harmless, while other 22 fish species are either venomous or poisonous. Here, venomous means that the individual fish can deliver or inject venom into other organisms, using a specialized apparatus; the venom is produced in a gland attached to this apparatus. ...
