本处自1984年成立以来，已执行多次生物相普查研究，然而数十年的调查研究却忽略了“蛾类”这群在农林经济、日常生活与生物多样性方面相当重要的生物类群；为了弥补此项研究于科学、知识、教育与保育策略的缺遗，本处邀请国立中山大学生物科学系教授颜圣紘团队历时3年调查，采集与鉴识园内达1200种蛾类，期间并发表至少59个台湾新记录种与8个世界新物种，展现垦丁国家公园的蛾类生物资源多样性。这系列分为两册，第一册介绍大异角类，第二册则介绍扣除蝴蝶与大异角类的鳞翅目成员。因为鳞翅目昆虫的议题相当多元复杂，我们在第一册简介分类体系、形态与鉴识要领，然后在第二册介绍重要的生态议题，以及与人类的关系。
