The Sylva is to be published in three volumes. Volume I covers tree species of gymnosperms and a part of angiosperms, including 27 families, 58 genera, 135 species and 30 varieties or forms. 700 color photographs are presented in it. The morphological characteristics, ecological habitats, geographical distribution, utilization and economic value of each species are described briefly. The great majority photographs were taken from living plants in the fields with authentic and direct colouration. It is there fore a new type of scientific work on tree knowledge and can be used for the scientific research, college teaching, production exploration, protection, development and rational use of tree resources.
