The International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Applications (ISRA-HEFEI) was held in Hefei, China, from May 9 to May 12, 1989. The Conference was sponsored by the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). There were nearly 160 participants from twelve nations around the world. The objectives of the Conference were: to promote the synchrotron radiation research and international interactions over the world, especially in the developing countries; to provide channels for the world to know and to cooperate with Chinese synchrotron radiation community.
More than eighty talks were given in this conference including 29 invited and 53 contributed. The contents were extensive and the topics included synchrotron radiation facilities, instrumentation, beamlines, experimental stations, experimental methods and results. About ninety papers were collected in this proceedings.
One day roundtable meetings occupied a very important period in the conference. It was held in parallel with the plenary session, and discussed the further cooperation between all the synchrotron radiation laboratories, especially those of the developing countries. A proposal for the cooperation on the North-South and South-South was discussed and some agreements reached. The summary of the roundtable discussion is included in the end of this book.
