Hemudu Remains, located in Yuyao City, Zhejiang Province, is one of China’s primitive village sites in the Neolithic Age. It was discovered in the summer of 1973 when the local peasants were engaged in builing water conservancy projects. Hemudu Remains, with a total area of about 40,000 square metres and with four cultural layers piled one upon anoter, is about four metres thick. Carbon 14 tests discolosed that the fourth cultural layer has already a history of 7,000 years or so. It was first excavated in the winter of 1973 and again in the winter of 1977. these two excavations, covering an area of 2,800 square metres, unearthed more than 6,000 objects among which there were production tools, primitive works of art and household utensils.Meanwhile traces of large quantities of cultivated rice and widespread remnants of timber – structure architectures were brought to liaght, which provided a very valuable source of substantial materials for the study of agriculture, architecture, textile, art and the origin of human civilization. Therefore it has been acknowledged by the academic circle as one of the most miportant discoveries in China , and hence named”Hemudu Remains”, it powerfully testifies to the fact that the Changjiang Valley is anoter birthplace of the ancient vivilizations of the Chinese nation. In 1982 , the State Council proclaimed Hemudu Remains one of the key preservations of cultural relics. The end of 1992 saw the completion of the Hemudu Remains Museum.
