From the 19th to the 2lst May 1994, the China Population & Environment Society organized a Symposium on China's Population and Environment in Nanjing to discuss population,environment and development issues. This Symposium was supported by the Ford Foundation and UNFPA, attended by 50 scholars and experts from both within and outside the country, and heard many papers of high quality on issues concerning China's population, environment and development.
The China Population & Environment Society together with the Ford Foundation, EU and UNFPA are now pleased to support a special English issue of "China Population and Environment", in which a selection of outstanding articles from last years'symposium and this year's symposium in Shanghai are published. Articles cover issues such as the relationship between population and environment, sustainable development, environment and reproductive health, consumption and environment problems and the impacts of population growth on agricultural development.
All crucial topics, which deserve attention, especially at this stage of ever-increasing population size, rapid economic growth, urbanization and changes in mobilization and a consumption patter, are discussed.
We sincerely hope this book will provide the reader with more insights into the environment problems that China is facing.
