A stamp is the postage certificate issued by tile national postal administration; and tile stamped envelops, postcards and letter-sheets are tile postal communications items issued by the administration for the convenience of the users. A postal date-stamp is a Special impression used by the administration to handle all types of services.

The People’s Republic of China has altogether issued over 3,000 stamps of all categories from her founding to 1998. The stamped envelops, postcards and letter-sheets not only reflect the development and changes in our politics, economy, culture, science and technology, but also portray the beautiful landscape and local conditions and customs of China. Unique in design and exquisite in printing, stamps are regarded as colorful artistic items of high collection and utility value, warmly received by the people arid sought by the stamp lovers for collection, appreciation and study.
Showing the history of our postal development, a postal date-mark carved with the name of a place and a date is a legally valid certificate, riot only serving as an important official seal for the services delivered, but also as an important basis for testing the quality and efficiency of postal communications.
Since the founding of new China, the postal administration has made several major changes to the specifications and standards of date-marks, the most significant of which are tile ones carved with postal codes and used during the decade from 1985 to 1995.
As the special function of the Date-mark has drawn the interest of the mass stamp collectors, date-mark collection and research have become all integral part of philately.
Chinese philately is part and parcel of the Chinese postal service and constitutes a cultural activity involving the collection, appreciation and study of stamps and other philatelic items. From an activity as such, People can enrich their knowledge and refine their temperament and interest to their delight. It can also help build advanced socialist culture and ideology by raising people's educational level. Therefore, it has become a component part of thle sparetime cultural activities of the Chinese people.
