Located in the southwestern border of China, the Xizang Plateau Autonomous Region, with its complex terrain, diverse climate, abundant water bodies and relatively low
latitudes, gave birth to the unique plateau aquatic ecosystems and plateau fish species in the world, including rare endemic fishes such as Glyptosternum maculatum
Oxygymnocypris stewartii and Psilorhynchus homaloptera. Combining with the scientific research on the protection and utilization of fishery resources in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River during 2014-2017, we collected, sorted and compiled the catalogs of Xizang Plateauan fish species and collected natural-color images of 56 species(subspecies) indigenous fish, as well as 13 exotic fish, supplemented with text. The main contents of the text are based on monographs and related literatures such as the “Fauna Sinica", "qinghai-xizang Plateau Plateau fishes", "Xizang Plateauan fishes and its resources","Ichthyography of Noemacheilinae in China","Chinese Lake Records and the results of our surveys. We hope this book will provide reference for researchers, students, environmentalists and tourists to promote the study and protection of fish diversity in Xizang Plateau, China
The authors attempt to collect all the fishes recorded in historical data in the form of pictures. Due to the current scarce resources of some endemic fish species, it is very
difficult to acquire live fish and sometimes it takes half a month to obtain a single sample. However, thirteen species of fish had not been collected, such as Schizopygopsis
younghusbandi wui, and the photos were gotten from the specimen library of Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The text includes the name of the
fish, body length, morphological characteristics, habits and distribution. Among them, the morphological description mainly included body size, body color and organ
characteristics. In the writing process of this book, some fish photos were provided by Professor Chen Yifeng at Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences: Mr
Chen Xiaoyong, Mr Shu Shusen and Mr Kong Deping at the Kunming Instituteof Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Professor Zhang Chunguang at the Institute of Zoology Chinese Academy of Sciences provided help in sciences text checking and specimen identification; Gong Junhua, Wang Jilong, Zhang Chi, Chen Zhongxiang, Cheng Lei,Wu Song, Huo Tangbin, Wi: Shanfu, Zhou Jianshe, Wang Wanliang, Zeng Benhe, Zhang Jingqun, Mou Fuyi, and Hu Heyuan also contributed in photo collection. Here, the authors express our most sincere apreciation for the kindly and valuable help!
