Mangroves are woody plant community in the intertidal zone of tropical coast. By the influence of Warm Ocean current, some species can grow in subtropical zone, by the influence of tide; some species can grow in river estuary and land where seawater can reach. So mangroves are composed of “real-mangrove” which grows in high-tidal zone that is immersed only in spring tide. The book summarizes the characteristics of the two kinds of mangrove types.

Mangroves are the special evergreen woody communities around the tropical coast of China. The total area of mangrove in China is about 40 thousand hectares which is about 0.5 per cent of 7.856 million hectares, the total area of mangroves throughout the world. Nevertheless the Chinese mangroves occur only in the areas of higher latitude of the world. A careful stuffy of them has certainly an important value to both the theoretical and productional aspects, which should be propagated enthusiastically. We believe that our duty from now on to pay more attention to make its importance known to all duty from now on to pay more attention to make its importance known to all first and then protecting and expanding the cultivated area of mangrove. It is highly important to develop the economic benefit of the ecosystem of tropical beaches and to beautify the environment, thus making more contributions for the prosperity of China.

There are 6 chapters in the book: first, it is defined that the mangroves and mangrove species, then it is discussed that habitat, adaptative physiology and morphology, distribution and uses of mangroves.

The book summarizes mainly the general characteristics of mangroves in the world, especially the characteristics and species of mangrove in China. It is made every effort to have scientific and systematic knowledge, and to propagate significance of protecting and developing mangroves.
