This textbook is to introduce graduates the basic principles and the recent developments in the nonlinear optics, a very active field in the modern optics. From this book, the graduates can understand the main concepts and the important treatment methods used in the nonlinear optics, and get an overview of several rapidly developed areas, such as second harmonic generation, stimulated scattering, ultrashort lasers and the research on the ultrafast responses of the novel materials.
The book consists of ten chapters. Chapter 1 is a general introduction of the nonlinear optics. Chapter 2 deals with the nonlinear optical susceptibility. In chapter 3 and 4, the second-order NLO phenomena are discussed. Since chapter 5, the research results on the third-order and even higher-order NLO effects are given. It includes four-wave mixing, stimulated Raman scattering, resonant interaction, NLO effects in the optical fiber, the ultrashort lasers and the related experimental techniques, the ultrafast response investigation of the novel materrials. Limited by the volume, the detailed mathematical treatment, the derivation of the formula and many experimental results cannot be enclosed in this book. The readers, who are interesting in the special effects, can read other corresponding books or reviews.
