A symposium on nucleic acids and proteins, organised jointly by the Chinese Academy of Sciences of the People's Republic of China and the Max-Planck Gesellschaft of the Federal Republic of Germany, was convened from October 28 to November 1,1979, in Shanghai. It was attended by over twenty scientists from West Germany, several invited guest participants from other countries and over sixty from the People's Republic of China.

The symposium was highlighted by several general lectures: one on ribosome structure by Professor H. G. Wittmann, one on insulin structure-function relationships by Professor Y.S. Zhang, one by Professor E. Kellenberger on mechanisms controlling protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid interactions, and another by Professor K. Kuhn on the molecular basis of collagen diseases. These (manuscript for the last paper not received) form the first part of the proceedings.

The rest consists of over ninety communications either in full or in abstract form. They are grouped under the following headings:
1) Proteins and Peptides. Isolation, Purification, Properties, etc.
2) Nucleic Acids, Proteins and Peptides. Chemical Synthesis.
3) Nucleic Acids, Proteins and Peptides. Structure and Function Relationships.
4) Enzymology.
5) Bacteriophages, Viruses and Their Action.
6) Molecular Genetics, Protein Biosyn-thesis, Gene Expression, DNA Recombination, Plasmids, etc.
7) Miscellaneous.

The papers on chemical synthesis deal with aspects of methodology, from classical liquid phase techniques to solid phase condensation of previously synthesized fragments in good yield, enzymatic joining of oligoribounucleotides to form larger fragments, and synthesis of biologically active peptides.

studies of structure-function cover insulin; and its derivatives, viral RNAs, transfer RNAs, muscle aldolase, fructose bisphosphatase, pyruvate kinase, glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase and the active principles of the medicinal herbs tricothansus and pinellia.

Protein biosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, gene expression, plasmids and restriction endonuclease action form the chief topics grouped under molecular genetics.

At the end of the volume arelisted the participants present at the symposium.

This will be the newest publication of the results of deep-going and systematic work in this field done by internationally renowned scientists of West Germany and China in recent years. The publication of the proceedings will be welcomed and valued by scholars of biochemistry and organic chemistry the world over. Furthermore, the proceedings will also be a valuable reference book for college scientific workers engaged in research work in related areas.
