Taiwan is an island with the sea lines 1,300 miles long. There are many strangely-shaped rocks and stones along the northern coast, cliffs along the eastern coast, sandy and muddy bays in the western coast and coral reefs on Hengchung Peninsula in the southern coast. In addition, there are lots of off-shore isles such as the Orchild Isle, the Green Island, the small Ryukyus, etc. And there are cold tides in the northern sea that come southward from Japan Sea and the warm black tide in the southwestern coasts that flow northward from the Philippines. The east faces the Pacific 1,000 to 5,000 square feet deep while the west faces the Taiwan Strait with water less than 200 square feet deep. Under such a complicated ecological environment it should be comprehensible that there are so abundant shells in Taiwan.
The book focuses in the studies of shells available in the southwestern sealines on Taiwan in the hope that readers will understand their ecology.(Adapted from The Catalog of Special Publications by Public Libraries in Taiwan for the 10th Taipei International Book Exhibition, 2002)
