The Longgudong Cave, located at the Jianshi County, Hubei Province, has long been known for the production of mammal fossils. In 1970, an expedition team of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology discovered some specimens of Gigantopithecus and three hominid teeth that were thought to be Australopithecus by Gao Jian (1975). These were later compared with Meganthropus paleojavanicus from Indonesia, and considered to be a possible early form of Homo erectus by Zhang (1984). The geological age of this fauna was thought to be later Early Pleistocene by faunal comparison (Xu et al., 1974)
For the discovery of more materials of hominids and Gigantopithecus, and better understanding of the evolution of early humans in East Asia, a multidisciplinary field survey and excavation of this site carried out during 1998~2000, was supported by the Science and Technology Ministry of China. As a result, three hominid teeth and thousands of fossil mammals belonging to 87species (including Gigantopithecus) were discovered. There also were discovered some stone artifacts from the same site. The artifacts, together with the hominid materials, show great potential for the study of human evolutionary history in the Early Pleistocene of East Asia.
In this monograph, there are eight chapters dealing successively with the geographic and geological background, description and correlation of the sections, and the study of the hominid materials, artifacts, fossil mammals, chronology, environment and then conclusions.
