Tibetan Tripitaka consists of two parts, i.e., Kanjur and Tanjur. It is the encyclopedia of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan traditional culture. The project of preparing a new collated edition of Tibetan Kanjur and Tanjur was undertaken by the Tripitaka Collation Bureau of China Tibetology Research Center as one of the key projects of National Research Council of Humanity and Social Sciences. The new collated edition of Tibetan Kanjur and Tanjur is prepared by learned Tibetan scholars and published in great quality by applying modern technology of binding and printing. It is the great achievement of the concerted efforts of scholars and editors of China Tibetology Research Center.

The critical edition of Kanjur was prepared by comparing eight different existing editions. They are editions of Yongle, Lijiang, Beijing, Zhuoni, Nartang, Derge, Kulun and Lhasa. Tanjur was collated by comparing four different existing editions, namely editions of Nartang, Beijing, Derge and Zhuoni editions. The Derge edition was used as the principal edition for preparing the new collated edition, while all other editions are used for comparison. All texts are checked and collated sentence by sentence. All kinds of textual differences and variations among various editions are listed at the end of each text. Therefore, if you have this new collated edition of Tibetan Kanjur and Tanjur at your hand, you actually possess all existing editions at the same time.

The Gangyur is a Buddhist classic. It contains teachings of Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism, which were recorded by his disciples during six gatherings held after his death. It consists of three "pitakas''--sutrapitaka which contains statements and teachings of Sakyamuni, vinaya-pitaka which contains precepts or disciplinary codes for Buddhist monks, and abhidharma-pitaka which contains treatises or explanations and research on Buddhist doctrines--and four supplementary works. They fall into the seven categories of vinaya (monastic rule), Prajna, buddhavatamsaka-mahavaipulya (Garland), Maha-rafna-kuta (Great Gem-Heap), sutrapitaka, supplement and general contents
