The 1:1000000 Vegetation Map of China is another important research achievement of Chinese Phytoecologists after the publication of the great monograph Vegetation of China in 1980 . It belongs to one of the Class A topics of both the " Agricultural Natural Resources and Developmental Regionalization" in the 108 key projects of the " Outline of 1978-1989 National Scientific and Technological Development Programme" and the fifth dey geoscientific project , the "Basic Research of the Water and Land Resources and Land Rational Utilization", in the Discinplinary Programme of the National Natural Sciences worked out in 1978 . Its Compilation was assigned formally by the former State Agricultural Commission, the former State Science and Technology Commission and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1979 . In June of the same year, a special meeting attended by related scientific research organizations and universities all over the country was held at the Institute of Botany, CAS and soon after that, the Editorial Board of Vegetation Map of China was established. Academician Hou Xueyu was elected as the editor-in -chief. Under the Editorial Board, Six coordinating groups were set up, the Editorial Board convened three nationwide scientific symposiums to discuss problems concerning vegetation classification, regionalization and mapping, and passed the mapping specification of 1:1000000 Map of Vegetation Types and 1:2000000 (Later changed into 1:6000000) of Vegetation Regionalization Map of China, as well as the draft of unified legend for the whole country. The 1:1000000 Vegetation Map of China shows the present vegetation of China. It is based on the results of the nationwide vegetation surveys and their associated researches in 50 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China and the relevant data from the aerial remote sensing and satellite images, as well as geology, pedology and climatology. The map, composed of 60 seperated 1:1000000 sheets, covers the whole China continent and illustrates comprehensively the geographical distributions of 11 groups of vegetation types, 796 formations and their subformations of 54 vegetation types and about 2000 dominants of communities, main agricultural crops and economic plants. On the one hand vegetation is an important natural resource, on the other hand , it is the complex reflection of natural conditions (geologo-geomorphologic, climatic and soil ) as well as their exploitation and utilization status by human. Therefore, the Vegetation map is not only indispensable base for understanding the natural characteristics of various regions, their biotic productive potential and ecological rules, so it has great scientific research and educational value: but also the foundation for the planning and designing of land management, development of agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry, bringing watersheds under control and environmental protection, etc, In addition, vegetation map can find practical applications also in communication and military. In short, the publication of the 1:1000000 Vegetation Map of China , undoubtedly will make important contributions to the scientific development and economic construction of China!
