This is a study on the Neolithic Cultures of Northern China, including the areas of Mid-Southern Inner Mongolia, Mid-Northern Shanxi Province, Northern Shaanxi Province, and Northwestern Hebei. So far relevant researches have focused on the cultures of individual units by means of periodization and cultural pedigree. This dissertation intends to depart from those researches in terms of both collection and interpretation of archaeological data. Methodologies such as archaeological stratigraphy, archaeological typology, archaeological culture, settlement archaeology, and environmental archaeology are applied here in an attempt to address the critical issues of periodization, cultural pedigree, settlement pattern as well as interaction between human society and environment
