This is a report of the joint project organized by the Indtitute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP), Academia Sinica and the Department of Anthropology, University of Tokyo (DAUT). THE Li, Miao, Hui and Han nationalities, living in Hainan Island of the People’s Republic of China have their own long and culture. In many aspects such as population, economy, culture, transportation and physical status, they have got rapid development in the recent 40 years. This Chinese-Japanese joint project, “Anthropological and Linguistic Survey of National Minorities in Hainan Island”, provided data and basis for further development of the three national minorities, as the anthropometric and hematological characteristics as well as the morbidity of some hereditary diseases are the important indicators of the physical status of a population; and the study of their linguistic and genetic characteristics would be of great help tp the understanding of the origins of the populatins and their relationships with others. What we dealt with here is only the part of anthropological study for which we are responsible. The parts on the hematological and linguistic studies will be or already published separately by other members of our joint team.
