China's Cultural Atlas: Culture in the Northeastern Region

Dongbei or the Northeastern Region is one of the richest regions in cultures and artifacts of China, covering the Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces. It was populated by the Xianbei (a nomadic proto-Mongol people) during the Han dynasty, then the Qidan (or Kitan, a semi-nomadic Mongolian people) during the Tang and Song dynasties, and the Ruzhen (or Jurchen, a Manchurian people) from the Song to the Yuan dynasties. Rich in cross-cultural activities, this place is where famous jades of the Hongshan culture, archaic bronzes from the Western Zhou dynasty, and rich artifacts, especially from the Liao dynasty, were found.
