The first comprehensive, large-scale report on the excavation of the sacrificial pits at Sanxingdui prepared by the Institute of Archaeology of Sichuan Province. This present work is divided into three parts: Introduction, Excavated Relics, and Conclusions. Introduction gives an account of the discovery and process of excavation of the Sanxingdui site and sacrificial pits, describing the location, stratigraphy and circumstances of burial of the pits, and provides an introduction to the post-excavation treatment and research of the relics. Excavated Relics describes each of the objects in detail, and is fully illustrated with line drawings and photographs. The last section, Conclusions, draws together the evidence of historical records and the nature of the excavated objects to frame hypotheses regarding the ethnic affiliation and possible function of the two pits. With an English abstract translated by Adam Smith.
