This book presents the latest developments in structural dynamics with particular emphasis on the formulation of equations of motion by finite element methods and the solutions of those equations using micro-computers. It is the first book which deals with frequency-dependent shape functions for realistic finite element modeling of dynamic problems and which points out that the conventional shape functions are only approximations.

This is a finite element text book with emphasis on structural dynamics. Element matrices of various orders are generated automatically. Frequency dependent element matrices are introduced such that many natural modes can be found from a small number of degrees of freedom. Dynamic substructure methods are the natural extensions. Solutions methods are explained from a physical point of view. Some of the most advanced solution algorithms are included with FORTRAN listings. A computer package for three dimensional frame vibration problems with substructuring facilities is given. The text is suitable for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students and practicing engineers.
