In 1985, the Institute of Mathematics, Academia Sinica, opened its door to researchers at home and abroad. Since then, with help of many mathematicians, great achievements have been obtained in mathematical researches.
As an important part of open work, each year the institute invites more than forty mathematicians as visiting scholars to pursue their researches or give lectures in various fields of mathematics. Also, several workshops are held each year, serving as a good forum for the famous mathematicians and graduate students in the same field to get together to discuss their own work and to keep up with new developments of the field in the world. And in the workshops a lot of results have been made, some of which are excellent.
In 1989 four workshops were held as follows.
1.Global Analysis and Partial Differential Equation.
2.Number-Theoretic Methods in Statistics.
3.Classical Analytic Number Theory.
4.Functional Analysis and Operator Algebra.
This proceedings carries a part of the papers and reports from visiting scholars and participants in the workshops.
