This volume is a main output of the first phase of MAFLECS after the lntemational symposium on Material Flux in the Coastal Seas with Special Reference to the East China Sea held on November 15-17, 1995 in Qingdao, China. The book consists of five chapters. They deal with physical background, sedimentation, carbon dioxide fixation, particulate and dissolved organic carbon and nutrients, respectively and pay the way for future study of ocean flux in the East China Sea, even though some viewpoints in individual paper might be controversial.
The book can be only considered as a start of the ocean flux study in the East China Sea and is neither the final result nor the termination by far for it.The aim of the book is to draw attention to and to encourage interests in ocean fluxes study in the East China Sea by providing the first results of the joint program. The second volume will come out some time next year.
