This proceedings is a collection of papers presented at the China-France Symposium on Finite Element Methods (April 19-23, 1982, Beijing), sponsored jointly by Academia Sinica and L'lnstitut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA) of France. The conduction of the symposium as well as the editing of the proceedings were directed by a committee, led jointly by Feng Kang and J. L. Lions, including P. Raviart, R. Glowinski, Lin Qun, and Huang Hong-ci as members.
Among the participants, 40 scientists were from China, 6 scientists from France (Lions, Glowinski, Bernadou, Begis, Saguez, Boujot), and in addition, 5 invited speakers from USA, West Germany, Italy and Japan (Babuska, Stummel, Frehse, Brezzi and Ushijima). The working language of the symposium was English.
The proceedings contains original contributions and survey articles covering a wide spectrum of topics concerning methodology, theiry, applications and software of FEM. It embraces such diverse areas as conforming and non-conforming elements, infinite elements, mixed and hybrid elements, boundary elements, defect corrections, superconvergence, adaptive techniques, singular perturbations, optimal control, elastic structures, free boundary problems, flow and plasma problems, Navirer-Stokes equations, neutron diffusion, etc.
