Abstract
China has a long history and a splendid national culture .People has long since developed some methodologies for keeping the corpse from decay.The ancient corpses we have so far discovered can be traced back to the primitive society in Xinjiang ,and to the Han ,Tan ,Song ,Yuan ,Ming and Qing Dynastics.The excavation sites are distributed over such regions as Xinjiang ,Neimengu ,Hubei ,Hunan ,Sichuan ,Guizhou ,Jiangxi , Fujian ,Zhejiang and Jiangsu.
The ancient corpses have a high value for academic research.Research on the ancient corpse can usually have more findings than that on the skeleton.
Research on the ancient corpse in China can be traced back to 1940’s,being restricted by the technology ,the earlier work was limited to anatomical and histological respects.Since the Mawangdui ancient corpse was excavated in 1970’s,the corpses have been studied systematically by a multidiscipline team from many institutes.By the end of 1970’s and the beginning of 1980’s ,a group of ancient corpses which was buried 3000 years ago had been excavated in Loulan and Hami,Xinjiang Autonomous Region .A research team was organized and a research project of the ancient corpses was conducted for many years .The data accumulated and the findings made by the team in the project are comparable to those of the Egyptian Mummies.
In this book ,combined with their historical background ,detailed descriptions on the excavated ancient corpses are provided .The research work and findings also are discussed systematically .The authors hope that the book is of some value to researchers in anthropology ,ethnology ,folklore ,archaeology and other subjects.
