Introduction: Water pollution is a serious problem in the People’s Republic of China and many other parts of the world. Modern techniques for monitoring pollution involve the use of pollution-sensitive insects and other organisms as sentinels of those factors in the water that are most likely to harm people. Some reasons that insects are especially useful for this purpose are provided in the introduction of this work.
