Fauna Sinica-Aves consists of fourteen volumes, and this is the fifth volume. It includes 3 orders (Gruiformes, Charadriiformes and Lariformes),17 families, 62 genera, 153 species and 26 subspecies.

In conformity with the classification system of Zheng Zuo-Xin (Cheng Tso-hsin, 1976, 2000) and del Hoyo J.,A Elliott and J Sargatal eds.(1996),the authors made the arrangement of each taxon in this volume. Some names of genus, species or subspecies and taxon were revised and supplemented by the authors, mainly followed some literatures those more often cited and generally recognized. For example, Gallirallus striatus was put into Gallirallus rather than into Rallus,Chlamytotis undulate and Tetrax tetrax were respectively put into Chlamytotis and Tetrax rather than into Otis. The Porphydotis porphyrioviridis which distributed in Fujian Province and Guangdong Province was restored. On the basis of Zheng Zuo-Xin(2000),3 species Porzana cinerea,Vanellus gregaricus and Glareola nordmanni were added into this volume
According to "The compiling rule of Fauna Sinica",each of the 3 orders includes general account and systematic account. The general account summarizes the characteristics of morph-anatomy and biology, taxonomic study and geographical distribution. The systematic account mainly describes the morphology, distribution and biology of families, genera and species. Especially for each species the following topics are treated:
1. Science nomenclature, with vernacular and alternative names in Chinese and English
2. Geographical distribution.
3. Identification characteristics.
4. Discussion of taxonomic problems
