This book referred mainly to the author’s published papers since 1984. Basic issues of soil zoology pertaining to the processes of forest ecosystems and restoration of degraded ecosystems were focused on. Vast experimental and field survey results were compared. The author discussed systematically the community structure and ecological functions of forest soil fauna in tropical and subtropical zones of southern China. The ecological study of soil animal communities was immature, and the methods and theories were mot well developed. However, this book laid out some new approaches worthy of discussion with other peers. This book focused on researches in forest ecosystems for their capability in sustaining genetic resources of soil fauna. Studies on soil fauna in forest ecosystems were mot only a need for the development of soil fauna fundamentals, but also a necessity in maintaining ecological balance of the earth and efficiently manipulating forest ecosystem for the sustainable development and utilization of forest resources.
