As per the objectives of Zoological Survey of India, several groups of animals were included in the earlier series on "Fauna of India", "Handbooks". The present one forms a contribution on the Indian Snakes is published as a "Handbook". The Snakes have a great role in the ecological balance and in the conservation of nature as most of them are the strong predators on the insect and rodent pests of agriculture as such bear an indirect and most benificial impact on the economy of our country. This "Handbook" will certainly serve useful purpose as it gives a comprehensive taxonomic account of all the snakes of India along with their phylogeny, geographical distribution, zoogeography, habits, habitats, status, conservation and captive breeding. This volume deals with a total of 239 species and subspecies of the suborder Serpentes distributed in 68 genera and 10 families
