Acoording to the Information Sheet presented in 1988 by the Department of Entomology of the British Museum (Natural History), "More than 10 million insect species are thought to exist, of which some 900000 are described, rising at about 7000 per year."

In 1935-1941, the late Dr. Wu, Chenfu F., the founder of modern entomotaxonomy of China in his famous monumental work-"Catalogus Insectorum Sinensium" Vol.I-VI has recorded 20069 species of insects in China. How many species of insects has been recorded in China since then? Not long ago, there was no answer to this question. The author holds that , today , it is time to fill up the historical gap. For establishing "Chinese Insect Residence Booklet", the author started working on the "List of Chinese Insects" Vol.I-IV in 1986. The records of Chinese species are mainly compiled for "Zoological Record", "Catalogus Insectorum Sinensium", "The Economic Insect Fauna of China", "Fauna of China", "Entomotaxonomia", "Acta Entomologica Sinica", "Acta Zootaxonomica port on National Condition of Biodiversity in China" (1998), up to 1995 more than 51000 species of insects were known to China. While in this "List", the records of Chinese insects have exceeded 70000 species. The new species included in this "List" are based on data up to 1990.

The contents of the different volumes are as follows:
Vol.I Protura, collembola, Diplura, Thysanura, Odonata, Ephemeroptera, Blattaria, Mantodea, Isoptera, Zoraptera,
Plecoptera, Phasmatodea, Grylloblattodea, Orthoptera, Embiidina, Dermaptera, Homoptera, Hemiptera, Psocoptera,
Mallophaga, Anoplura, Thysanoptera.
Vol.II Coleoptera, Strepsiptera, Megaloptera, Neuroptera, Raphidiodea, Mecoptera, Trichoptera.
Vol.III Lepidoptera
Vol.IV Diptera, Siphonaptera, Hymenoptera

There are 22 orders, 293 Families, 3745 Genera, 14372 species (subspecies), 7190 synonyms and 972 references included in this volume. Of the total 14372 species, 3920 species were named by Chinese entomologists. The host records of 5070 species of insects were known to us.

The Latin names of species of insects are arranged in alphabetic order under every Family. Each species of insect includes their Latin name, synonyms, hosts, distribution at home and abroad known to us. Attached to the end of this volume are: selected references; Index to Genera, Families, Superfamilies, Sections, Suborders and Orders of insects and Index to Species and Subspecies of insects.

On the basis of the "International Code of Zoological Nomenclature", several new names for the replacement of those invalid species names of insect have been given. As a basic material in entomology, this "List" may be of help of those institutions of teaching, scientific research, agriculture, forestry, animal husbandary, fishery, medical science, environmental protection, depositary, sanitation, customs and quarantine, etc.
