Mangroves are woody plant communities in the intertidal regimes of tropical coasts.By the influence of warm current, some speies can grow in subtropical coasts. In estuary, some species can also grow at inner coasts where seawater can reach by the influence of tides. Therefore, mangroves can be divided into "true mangroves"that only grow in intertidalzone where the tide can reach daily and "semi-mangroves'that are amphibious plants or grow in upertidal zones where only the spring tide can reach. Now,most ecologists have recognized six major roles of mangroves:(1)mangroves can help the formation of soil sediment by trapping debris, and protect sea wall against tide and flood;(2) mangroves can filter land runoff as well as removing organic matters and pollutants;(3)mangroves are good habitats and feeding sites for many marine animals including fishes and other aquatic organisms;(4)mangroves are major producers of detritus contributing to offshore productivity;(5)mangroves can be used as timber, firewood, food, medicine and other raw chemical materials;and (6)mangroves contain natural and man-made landscapes, which have important values in appreciation, entertainment, and learning and education. In a word, researches on mangroves are of great significance in both theory and practice.
