The atlas consists of five disciplinary atlases: Geology and Geophysics, Chemistry, Biology, Hydrology and Climatology, covering the area between 20°40'N-41°30'N and 116°00'E--131°30' E. All the charts in this atlas were developed by using Mercator projection with 30°N as the standard parallel. The data used in compiling the atlas are taken from the marine data acquired on the basis of a great deal of surveys and investigations conducted by various marine research institutions, colleges and universities during the period from the founding of the People's Republic of China through 1987. A nationwide large scale marine survey was conducted as early as in 1958. In the subsequent 30 years, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) of China and the relevant organizations, in the light of needs of national economic construction have successively carried out a large amount of marine survey, marine monitoring and marine scientific research on various scales and with substantial content in the surrounding waters of China, and obtained a great quantity of surveying and observational data, and rich scientific research result. This series reflects these achievements in marine survey. The First Institute of Oceanography, the Second Institute of Oceanography, the Third Institute of Oceanography, the Institute of Marine Scientific and Technological Information, the Institute of Marine Environmental Protection, the National Research Center for Marine Environmental Protection participate in the work of editing the atlas. It is the most comprehensive and the most systematic large basic marine atlas in China so far. It may provide a benefiting reference for institutes, universities and the concerned units of marine research, administration and production.

This atlas which shows a basic feature on marine biology for the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, consists of 531 maps and figures. The final chart scale 1:7,000,000. The date used in the atlas have been collected from the following investigations: four cruises of investigation in the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in summer and autumn of 1984, and winter and spring of 1985; four cruises of investigation in the sea to the west of the middle line of the Taiwan Strait in spring, summer, and autumn of 1984 and in winter of 1985(45 stations for primary productivity and plankton and 54 for benthos). Besides, the maps resulted form data of monthly investigation for plankton at 68 stations in the southern Yellow Sea, and the East China Sea from December 0f 1977 to November of 1978, have also been attached.
