China and Japan are the world's main producers of sweetpotato and potato, and especially in sweetpotato the two countries led the world. Great advances have been made in genetic resources, genetics and breeding, cultivation and physiology, diseases and pests, biotechnology, and processing. Since coming back from Japan in 1993. I felt that scientists from China and Japan should exchange their research results and experiences in sweetpotato and potato to further the research and production of these both crops. This idea is supported by many Chinese-Japanese Symposium on Sweetpotato and Potato is held in the 90-year old Beijing Agricultural University.
This symposium is sponsored by Beijing Agricultural University, Xuzhou Sweetpotato Research Center, Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Food Crops Research Institute of Jiangsuf Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Upland Crops Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. National Natural Science Foundation of China and Calbee Potato Incorporation of Japan provided generous financial support to the symposium.
This proceedings volume includes 122 papers presented at the symposium; they are arranged in six sections, reflecting recent advances in the six fields mentioned above. During the symposium, lots of poster presentations are exhibited. Hence, this scientific gathering is a forum to exchange the research results and experiences, to discuss the problems and challenges, and to com up with the possible solutions for today and tomorrow.
