The insects of Japan is a series of occasional publications and has been established with two major objectives to encourage those with expert knowledge to publish comprehensive accounts of a taxon in the Japanese fauna, and to provide a mean of identification with the latest information on the biodata accessible to the non-specialist. It will deal insects of Japan including descriptions and diagnostic features of taxa, distribution, biodata, of host plants and other aspects of biology, illustrations of important features and photographs of every species, and distribution maps for representative species as a rule.
Japanese genera and species of the suborder Trbulifera are recognised. 235 species in 75 genera are recorded, of which 4 genera and 71 species are newly described, and 13 genera and 28 species are recorded from Japan for the first time. The text is included preliminary notes on historical review, biology, biogeography, classification, morphology and technical methods, and brief notes on distribution and bionomics for each species. Keys to taxa are given, and each taxon is described correctly. More than 1,000 text figures with about 20 whole shapes are illustrated. The explanatory summary in Japanese for identification is added.
