There are more than ten thousand species of locusts and grasshoppers in the world, and about one thousand known species in China.
More that sixty species of them have done damage in varying degree to agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry. Locust plague caused by outbreak is an outstanding problem in the history of China. In retrospect, flood, drought, and locust outbreak constituted the three great disasters in the prolonged old Chinese feudal society, bringing calamity to the Chinese people for numerous generations.
Many records on disasters caused by locusts can be found in ancient Chinese books, county annals and local chronicles. For example, the locust to starve to death. It means that the problem of locust infestation has a long history in China and the damage was sometimes enormous.
Our experience in the past three to four decades has proven that the strategy of “Combining ecological reform with control in the elimination of migratory locust outbreaks” is right not only for the migratory locust, but also for the other species of locusts and grasshoppers.
