The Tarim Basin is rich in charophytes, the earliest report was made by Prof.Lu Yan-hao. The fossil charophytes described in this paper are distributed in the rocks from the Carboniferous to Quaternary.
Systematically described in this paper are 4 families, 10 subfamilies, 33 genera, 2 subgenera and 129 species ,1 species affinis, 8 species conformis and 18 species indeterminate. The charophytes from the Carboniferous to Quaternary rocks are grouped into 1 charophyte zone and 13 charophyte assemblages. The geological ages of the above charophytes, the division and correlation of the relevant strata are detailed in this paper. The classification, evolution and geographic provincialism of charophytes are discussed as well.
