The fossil plants described in the following pages were collected in south-western China by the director of the Geological Survey of China, Dr. v. K. Ting. The collection was sent for examination to the Paleonbotanical Department of the Swedish State museum of natural History in 1915. Most of the illustrations were prepared the same year but, for several reasons, the description of the material has had to be postponed till now. The fossils are from various localities in the provinces of Yunnan, Szechuan and Kweichou and belong to very different geological horizons. The localities have not all yielded a material of fossil plants suffic to serve along as a basis for determination of their geologicl age. They have been alanged here-partly as a result of the paleobotanical examination, partly in consideration of the geological data communicated by Dr. Ting-in several groups supposed to represent respectively the lower Devonian, Middle Carboniferous, Lower Carboniferous, Permian and Rhatic. The evidence for the geological age thus assigned to the various plant-bearing horizons will be given separately for each group of localities.
