The Taklimakan Desert, located within the boundaries of Xingjiang, China, is the second largest mobile desert in the world. Its vastness, inaccessibility and uncertainty, as well as the fact that the world renowned Silk Road passed through the desert, enable it to be full of mysteries and fascination. For a long time, it has aroused great concern of the earth science circle and historical science circle in China and abroad. In recent years, the finding of rich oil and natural gas resources in the desert, has further inspired the people's will of overall understanding of the taklimakan desert.
From 1987 on, the Chinese academy of Sciences and China National Petroleum Corporation have been jointly in charge of organizing the implementation of integrated Scientific Investigation of Taklimakan Desert, which has put geography geology, biology and historical science into an organic whole, and overall and systematically revealed the resources and environments of the Taklimakan desert in their true colors.
