Proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics the 14th congress of Asia and Pacific Division, International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research 15-18 December 2004, Hong Kong.

In the sustainable development of our water resources, hydraulic engineers are often called upon to solve water environment problems. These include the impact of large scale reclamation, eutrophication and harmful algal blooms, enhancement of water quality by de-stratification, design of sea outfalls and power plant cooling water systems, and restoration of aquatic ecosystems, and restoration of aquatic ecosystems.
Volume 1 of ‘Environmental Hydraulics and Sustainable Water Management’ contains a collection of keynote and invited lectures, together with contributions selected for presentation at the 4th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics. A rich body of the latest advances in turbulent transports and mixing processes, stratified flow, hydrodynamic and water quality modeling can be found herein-along with examples of novel concepts for studying complex eco-hydraulic problems. The collection of papers reflects the vibrant research activity on environmental hydraulics, as well as the complementary role of numerical modeling, experimental and field studies for the solution of practical engineering problems.

In the new millennium water problems will be associated with increasing complexity and wider scope, brought about by issues such as global climate change, massive urbanization, and trans-boundary pollution. Examples include the assurance of an adequate and clean water supply, the prevention of urban and basin flooding, and the protection of the aquatic environment.
Volume 2 of ‘Environmental Hydraulics and Sustainable Water Management’ contains a collection of keynote and invited lectures, together with contributions selected for presentation at the 14th IAHR-APD Biennial Congress. A rich body of the latest advances in the science and engineering practice of sustainable water management can be found herein-ranging from sediment transport in natural channels, hydraulic structures, design of urban stormwater drainage systems, to hydrological prediction and flood control-along with new paradigms of water resources and ecosystem management. It gives a rich mixture of the theory and practice, including many case studies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Both volumes of ‘Environmental Hydraulics and Sustainable water Management’ are of special interest to engineers, academics and researchers in the fields of hydraulics and water environment, earth scientists, geographers, and planners.
