This book, supported by China State Electric Power Corporation, summarizes the successful experience in dam construction obtained during the past 50 years and provides enlightening information to colleagues all over the world.

It is organized into 21 chapters, and focuses on the innovative technology and practicable know-how.

Although each chapter is independent, they have common features of being typically Chinese with concerns on technical advances and academic achievements.

These chapters are highlighted as follows:

Chapter 1 reviews the development of China's dam construction
technology including an overview of ancient Chinese dam
construction, traditional expertise and recent innovations.

Chapter 2 describes China's abundant hydropower resources as well as
their characteristics, extent of exploitations, and future
of China's waterpower.

Chapter 3 covers the advances in hydrological analysis and hydropower
potential assessment related to China's hydropower
development.

Chapter 4 discusses the environmental technology in dam construction.

Chapter 5 introduces the geological problems encountered in dam
construction. It reviews the main four geological
exploration tasks involved in dam construction, which are:
regional tectonic stability and earthquake risk assessment,
hydro and environment geology, dam site engineering geology
and hydrogeology,, and natural construction materials.

Chapter 6 desribes the characteristics in planning and layout for
China's large hydropower stations as well as the design
aspects of various types of dams.

Chapter 7 presents the numerical models of shape optimization for arch
dams and the corresponding mathematical approaches.
Applications of these methods for practical problems have
been given.

Chapter 8 reviews the development of roller compacted concrete dams
with particular interests in the applications of fly-ash,
and the construction method of thin layer, full cross
section and continuous placement.

Chapter 9 gives a general review of special concrete for high dam with
characters of high strength, and low heat. Also included are
approaches for crack-proof and abrasion-proof at high
velocity with high sedimentation flow. This chapter reviews
the main characteristics of the special concrete such as
Polymer, silica fume and underwater non-dispersive concrete
as well as their applications.

Chapter 10 reviews China's concrete face rockfill dams, characterized
by its wide spread coverage over the country with a variety
of climatic and topographic conditions. Some dams involve
large construction scales and challenging heights of 200m.
The profession has given special concern over scientific
research which resulted in outstanding achievements.

Chpater 11 covers the underground works technology which includes
large-diameter and high -pressure tunnels, underground
power houses, penstocks with deep overburden, unlining and
shotcrete lining runnels.

Chapter 12 discusses the mechanism of high rock slope failures
occurred during China's hydropower construction and the
approaches for slope stability analysis and stablizations.

Chapter 13 highlights the achievements, status and characteristics of
China's dam earthquake engineering. Emphasis has been given
to the seismic background, tasks of earthquake engineering,
earthquake damage evaluation, reservoir-induced earthquake,
criterions, standards and specifications for seismic design
and anti-earthquake measure.

Chapter 14 concerned with the design principles for discharge
facilities in high dam complex and the achievements in
developing new types of energy dissipators. This chapter
also presents some concerned with energy dissipation for
high velocity flow.

Chapter 15 reviews the dam engineering related navigation facilities
which have been completed or under construction. They
include Gezhouba, Shuiko, Yantan, and three Gorges. Issues
addressed in this chapter includes the buildings (shiplock
and shiplift), structures (the lock head and chamber),
hydraulics (water supply and valves hydraulics), and the
metal equipment (the gates, valve hoists and related
equipment).

Chapter 16, 17 and 18 cover the construction technology and equipment
of the Three Gorges, Ertan and Xiaolangdi Project
respectively.

Chapter 19 summarizes the achievements and the special problems in
manufacturing hydraulic machinery. The author gives a
special discussion on the design conditions and optimal
hydraulic properties of the Three Gorges units.

Chapter 20 presents the advances in scientific research that has
greatly promoted the development of China's hydropower
construction, particularly in the past 20 years. It gives a
brief introduction to the large research instrument
installed in China Institute of Water Resources and
Hydropower Research, such as the large-scale shaking table
with 3-dimensinal vibrations, the geotechnical centrifuge,
dynamic triaxial testing machine, etc.

Chapter 21 gives a forward look of China's hydropower development,
which presents Chinese dam builders both challenges and
opportunities of solving difficult technical problems and
achieving their new ambitions.
