Shandong Province lies in the eastern coast of China and the lower reaches of Yellow River. The province, covering a land area of 153,300 k㎡, is geologically a part of the second upwarping and setting zone of the Neocathaysian system. A sound stratigraphic sequence in the geological history can be recognized, and a variety of magmatic rocks and well developed metamorphic rocks are distributed in the province. The famous Yishu fault zone runs through longitudinally in the middle of the province.
Basically, by the end of 1968, the regional geological survey (mapping on the scale of 1:200,000) in the whole province had been finished by the Geological Bureau of Shandong (GBS) and the revision of the map sheets and re-mapping (on the scale of 1:200,000) were conducted (with some map sheets finished now). Meanwhile, studies on special subjects, such as stratigraphy, tectonics, magmatic rocks and metamorphic subjects in the province were carried out to improve the understanding of the regional geology. On this basis the Shandong Bureau of Geology﹠Mineral Resources (SBGMR) request for compiling and publishing the regional geological monographs and related geological maps of provinces, cities and autonomous regions by the Ministry of Geology﹠Mineral Resources. The monograph was based on the results obtained from the Comprehensive Researches Brigade before 1985, and the data of reconnaissance survey and mineral prospecting before 1982. For geologists at home and abroad, the monograph will be useful as a reference in searching for mineral deposits, in scientific researches and teaching activities and in the development of national economy.
