Sichuan province is of great importance to Chinese tectonics. The pre-Cambrian basement with double-layer texture exposed in this Province forms the westernmost part of Upper Yangtze Platform, which is an ideal site for studying Yangtze basement and its peripheral mobile zones. During Late-Palaeozoic-Masozoic, the seat of Sichand was the scene of interaction among China Palaeo-Tethys, Qinling- Kunlun ocean and Yangtze platform, which is necessary for understanding of Paleo-Tethys extending from Southwest Asia to Southeast Asia. Also, western Sichuan plateau is one of the greates Indosinian fold zones in the world. Post-Triassic intracontinental modification was very intensive for this Province, including a variety of netectonic movements, such as block-faulting, seismic activity, glaciation and mud-debris flow, and presently observed major features of “geological mystery”, which has an attraction for Chinese and foreign geologists.

A preparation of this monograph began in 1984, chiefly based on 80 sheets of regional geological surveying results at a scale of 1:200000, in combination with recent reports on special Projects and selective field works. This monograph, with figures of 245 and tables of 101. contains five parts. Main attached maps in this monograph include Sichuan Geological Map and Magmatic Rock Map at a scale of 1:1000000, and Sichuan Tectonic Map and Metamorphic Rock Map at a scale of 1:2000000.
