On February 13, 2004, the UNESCO Advisory Committee of Geoparks agreed to establish a Global Network of National Geoparks and approved 25 European and Chinese geoparks to be initial members in this network. The coordinating office for the global network of geoparks was established in Beijing, China at the Ministry of Land and Resources on 27th June 2004. the First International Conference on Geoparks was held June 2 to June 29, 2004 in Beijing, China.
