In the west of China lies a vast land of mystery, the world famous Hexi Corridor.
Massive sediments were deposited here over billions of years through its geological evolution; the brilliant culture of China’s west, embodied by the ancient Silk Route was also created here during thousands of years in human society development.
Thousands of geologists come to China’s west to look for its rich mineral resources; tourists all over the world come to China’s west for its ancient cultural heritage and its exquisite landscape. China’s west has become on e of the strategic regions in her modernization construction.
What an enchanting west! What a legendary West!
Hexi Corridor takes its name from being in the west of Yellow River (Huang He). It is a narrow strip of land , one thousand odd km in length but only one hundred km even several km in width. The basins in Hexi Corridor that are significant in petroleum geology generally are meant the area to the south of the China-Mongolia border, to the east of Xinjiang, to the north of Qinghai and to the west of east longitude 1040, including Hexi corridor, Qilian Mountain, Badanjilin Desert and Tenggeli Desert. There are 30 Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary basins scattered in this area of 450,000 sq km. The major basins, such as Dunhuang, Akesai, Jiuquan, Huabai, Caoshui, Yabulai, Wuwei, Minhe, etc. are prospective areas for exploration of oil and gas in the west.
Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province is one of the earliest regions of petroleum Exploration and development in China. It is the birthplace of the petroleum industry in China. The first natural crude oil base in China, Yumen Oil field, is located in the northern foothills of Qilian Mountain in Hexi Corridor.
For the last five decades, several generations of petroleum geologists and explorers have achieved remarkable successes in the exploration of these basins by surveying the mountains and valleys, sandy hills and deserts in Hexi Corriodor with the tenacity of the “camel spirit”, Their footprints are left in gobi deserts, their perspirations can be smelt by the lofty Qilain Mountain. Thousands upon thousands of “Iron Man” are remembered in the record of finding oil in the West, the historical merits and achievements of the oil workers are engraved forever in the mind as thinking of the great west.
Turfan-Hami Bain in Xinjiang is adjacent to western Gansu. Exploration in that basin was done several times by Yumen Petroleum Administration in the fifties. In recent years exploration has been resumed and important discoveries have been made. So the main source and reservoir formations in Turfan-Hami Basin are included in this album to make it more colorful in portraying the west.
The album aims at presenting the petroleum geology, geomorphological features and exploration prospects of Hexi Corridor. The artistic photos reveal, across time and space, the great geological changes brought about by billions of years, providing a bird’s eye view of the grandeur of natural landscape and appreciation of the wilderness of the west. Under the sponsorship of China national petroleum corporation and China petroleum photography association, in less than a year of overall planning, field shooting and editing, we dedicate this album to the glorious nineties, to the geological explorationists, to our friends at home and abroad who are devoted to the development of northwestern China and petroleum industry.
